The only place that an *arbitrary* expression (including e.g. = as equality) can appear in the LHS is inside parentheses, otherwise you're limited to dot and call/index (which are both parentheses, which isn't a problem for the parser since no object can do both and it's the same kind of expression) just like in Python. -- https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list
