After trying the following... http://askubuntu.com/questions/577093/how-to-install-gnome-desktop $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell http://tipsonubuntu.com/2014/06/06/change-display-manager-ubuntu-14-04/ $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm I am now able to login. But, not sure what happened to the "lightdm" display manager.
