Thanks for all the ideas. As I'm an Emacs user (since Gosmacs in the early 80s), I will likely focus my attention there first. While the xkbmap/Xmodmap path seems like it would also work on Linux, I'm guessing Apple wouldn't allow that sort of thing to sully Mac OS X... Despite its name <wink>
