Make shouldn't be involved in any serious work. It was designed for the case where you have a handful of source files in a single directory. Its use has gotten completely out of hand. I sincerely recommend SCons for anything more serious. A word of warning, though: SCons gives you the power of Python. Don't use that power except in utmost need.
