Thanks, ctypes is actually a great idea, I should have thought about that. In the meantime I use the simple function def get_local_path_from_uri( uri ): return uri.split( '//' )[1] and it seems to work. In the program the function is always called in a try: except: block so if anything is not okay it will get caught, I don't have to catch exceptions inside the function.
