In order to get the job done, it is enough to study 50 pages of it. There are people with the ability to figure out very quickly which are the relevant 50 pages and ignore the other 950. Granted, these people will have a shallow knowledge with respect to somebody studying the whole manual, but they will get the job done much faster and in some circumstances speed is more valuable than deep knowledge. To be able to content himself with a shallow knowledge is a useful skill ;)
