This is the UTF-8 encoded form of U+21B3, which is the DOWNWARDS ARROW WITH TIP RIGHTWARDS character that you're showing. That's what the "bytecode" you're seeing is. You may be able to ask the underlying program to make its output in a cleaner format - try looking for a --porcelain option or similar - but as I see it, everything in Python is doing what it ought to do.
