That's not really a good way to put it. 2.6 and 2.7 will get security fixes, but there won't be a 2.8 unless someone actually does fork it. There's a split among users because it's not trivial to migrate major projects and production systems. For beginners, 3.x is the way to go unless the point is to maintain/work with existing 2.x systems.
