You just assign values to keys. If the key doesn't exist, it's created automagically. You want something like this: shaDict = {} for fileName in fileNameList: hash = generateShaHash (fileName) shaDict[hash] = fileName -- http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list
