actually, it's this doesn't work (again, in VBS the "same"
construction works properly):

f = os.popen('osql -E -S(local) -dpubs -w800 -Q"' + query + '"', 'r')

res=f.readlines()

here "query" is a multiline string like:

select getdate()

select getdate()
