The API however, smells more like java to me than python. Alas, I will happily use it for many of my needs.
IIRC, Sun significantly rewrote the scripting interface to StarOffice before they released the codebase to OpenOffice.org. It's hardly surprising to know that they did so in a very Java-centric way. And given limited resources (and presumably continued guidance from Sun in the form of Sun developers working on OO.o), it's not too surprising that OpenOffice hasn't changed that much.
