The sheer amount of overhaul as documented in http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-3100/ makes it already not backwards compatible. Python has been progressing piece by piece, but the 2.x -> 3.0 transition allows to clean up some thing in a good way, rather than bolting things on top of others.
