These need to be lists.
data_files = [
('/etc/', ['files/etc/logmanager.conf']),
('/etc/logmanager.d/', ['files/etc/logmanager.d/portage.py']),
],
Since distutils is expecting a sequence, it tries to iterate over the string
yielding individual characters, like 'f'.
