On the python-dev mailing list there was discussion of some of these issues in the context of the Linux Standard Base specifications: http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2006-November/070027.html Despite the specificity implied by the LSB name, I think such work would produce benefits for all Python developers with similar concerns, regardless of their chosen platforms.
