It's always nice to know there are such good-natured people ready to help on this group. Anyway, I figured out a way to get the builtin function 'sum' to work as I need: sum([[1,2,3],[4,5,6],[7,8,9]], []) On an unrelated note, can anyone explain this unpredictable behavior on IDLE? I swear I never hit ctrl-c... ============================== >>> help(sum) Help on built-in function sum in module __builtin__: sum(...) sum(sequence, start=0) -> value Returns the sum of a sequence of numbers (NOT strings) plus the value of parameter 'start'.
