I disagree. I studied Python, even though it had nothing to do with my job, just with the idea of using it on hobby projects; yet I believe I can reasonably claim to have learned more than 50% of the syntax and 1% of the concepts, even though you might claim that, whatever percentage it may be, it's "frittered away on inconsequential newsgroups".
