It could but currently cannot. The code checks for ``tuple`` literally:
pats = pat if isinstance(pat, tuple) else (pat,)

The test should be inverted - check for string, not for iterator/iterable:
pats = (pat,) if isinstance(pat, string) else pat # Assume ``pat`` is an
iterable
