The reason the comment is in the code is because this discussion happened before on this same list. Returning "the largest non-NaN value" I consider flat-out crazy as a possibility (all the more so since doing that is sensitive to exactly where the NaNs occur in a way that requires a good understanding of Timsort to predict).
