Eli, Thanks a lot for your continuing effort. I would like to check in your work before any further enhancement. Please find a reasonable stop point and post a commit ready patch preferably with a news file entry describing the bug that is fixed. Note that test additions don't get a NEWS entry - I'll describe those in the checking log entry. Unless you think 2.7 backport is tricky, please post only py3k patch. I'll merge the changes.
