I'm attaching a corrected patch, which has all the changes needed to get this to build on OpenSolaris. It basically only checks for things before trying to compile with them, so it should be safe (and desirable) on any platform.
I've not checked this on OpenSolaris on the SPARC hardware, though the use of OpenSolaris on SPARC hardware is very rare I believe.
