I'm not sure if there will be interest in merging this PR since it hasn't happened in all this time, but then again we've been emitting deprecation warnings from these functions and methods for a *decade* now. If the decision at this point is still not to move forward with removal, we should just remove the deprecation warnings and document it as a supported and bona-fide alias.
