At this point, I'm inclined to say let's wait and see what the 3.8.0b4 feedback looks like. Given that WSL has been fudging the boundaries here and hasn't suffered as a result, I don't expect much of a problem (and this change does actually make realpath() consistent between Windows native and WSL, which is nice).
