devurandom added the comment: In my case, /etc/hostname, /proc/sys/kernel/hostname, `uname -n`, `hostname -f` all show the same FQDN, but `python -c 'import socket ; print(socket.getfqdn())'` still prints the short hostname. /etc/hosts is empty except for localhost. /etc/nsswitch.conf contains: hosts: files mymachines resolve [!UNAVAIL=return] dns myhostname
