Nick Coghlan added the comment: We don't use the alpha and beta phases for maintenance releases, so I think the checks are functionally equivalent.
For example, the 3.6 branch currently reports itself as "3.6.1 final", will temporarily report itself as "3.6.2 release" during the rc period, and then go back to reporting itself as "3.6.2 final".
