Martin Panter added the comment: Thanks for the pointer Serhiy (I missed it before my last comment). On OS X, it looks like rlim_t is 64-bit unsigned, and RLIM_INFINITY is 2**63 - 1 (0x7FF . . .). Looking over the /Modules/resource.c code, I can see potential problems with it, but cannot imagine how they would cause the behaviour I was getting.
