Cyd Haselton added the comment: On a related note, I managed to get pip working with this build...minus some errors with verbose mode. I first had to make some edits to setup.py and Modules/Setup so that the build would find and make the _ssl and lzip modules. After running make install, I ran 'python -m ensurepip'. I tested it by searching for and installing the BeautifulSoup module.
