Marc-Andre Lemburg added the comment: The unicode-escape codec was used in Python 2 to convert Unicode literals in source code to Unicode objects. Before PEP 263, Unicode literals in source code were interpreted as Latin-1. See http://legacy.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0263/ for details.
