Terry J. Reedy added the comment: I understand Stefan to (reasonably) want 1 api instead of 2. He imagined that the only way to do that would be for everything to at least partially imitate the old methods. Larry and Nick are suggesting instead that everything should adopt the implementation-independent new method. Sounds right to me. So further discussion should be about PEP 457, elsewhere.
