Nick Coghlan added the comment: Just noting for the record (since it appears it was never brought back to the comments): it is expected that programs that manipulate the AST may require updates before they will work on a new version of Python. Preserving AST backwards compatbility is too limiting to the evolution of the language, so only source compatibility is promised.
