Paul added the comment: Right, #7643 indeed seems to be exactly about the issue I described here (for as much as I know unicode which isn't all that much). So maybe they should be merged. The issue was closed March 2010, is that after 2.7.3 was released?
By the way, where I wrote \x12, \x13, \x14, and \x15, I should have written \x1c, \x1d, \x1e, \x1f (the hex representation of characters 28 to 31).
