Richard Oudkerk added the comment: unfinished_tasks is simply used as a counter. It is only accessed while holding self._cond. If you get this error then I think the error text is correct -- your progam calls task_done() to many times.
The proposed patch silences the sanity check by making it block for a while instead. The fact the program seems to work without deadlocking does not mean the program or the patch is correct.
