Ambroz Bizjak added the comment: A minor issue: if only --host= is specified on command line but not --build=, then cross_compiling variable is only defined after AC_PROG_CC is called. However, configure.ac uses it before that (e.g. the part at the top which looks for a python interpreter). Well, more precisely, something in autoconf sets it to cross_compiling=maybe.
