Since the only cost is an extra slot, and this is for users who have already chosen to use Decimal instead of a more efficient (but possibly less accurate) representation, even without the native speedups to Decimal ... I guess I'm now +1. It is clearly an implementation detail, so I don't think the docs need to be changed. I'm not sure the tests do, nor am I sure *how* to test for it in a black-box fashion. I have reviewed the patch and have no objections.
