This position within the Structural Chemistry Department at Merck Research 
Laboratories (Boston MA USA) will support drug lead discovery and optimization 
through the experimental structural determination and interpretation of 
therapeutically important targets. The successful candidate will perform 
crystallization screening, crystal optimization, and structure determination of 
ligand complexes and will work in collaboration with medicinal and 
computational chemists. The successful candidate will also work closely with 
molecular biologists and protein biochemists and will have access to automated 
cloning, expression, and crystallization technologies as well as a variety of 
instrumentation for biophysical analyses.

Productive and collaborative interactions with other members of the global, 
cross-functional department are required. There is an expectation for periodic 
travel to other locations. Cooperative and collaborative use of internal 
expertise and resources will be essential to success. The position requires 
active interaction with the external scientific community to continually 
improve scientific understanding, including presentations at national or 
international meetings.

Qualifications

Education :

 *   Ph.D. degree with minimum of 2 years postdoctoral training in protein 
crystallography.

Required :

 1.  Demonstrated capability to design and execute X-ray crystallographic 
structure determination using all modern techniques, including molecular 
replacement and experimental phasing.
 2.  Excellent communication skills (written, presentation, and oral) that 
enhance team-based progress is required. Application of those skills both 
within and outside the department to ensure understanding of program status for 
therapeutic area project teams and management.
 3.  Demonstrated potential to develop project management skills and 
identify/develop new areas of scientific expertise in protein crystallography.
 4.  Ability to work effectively and flexibly within timelines.
 5.  Ability to prepare peer-reviewed publications.

Preferred:

 1.  Knowledge of state-of-the-art structural biology techniques including 
construct design, expression, purification, crystallization 
screening/optimization, and structure determination/analysis.
 2.  Experience with biophysical and functional characterization methods (e.g. 
SPR, thermal shift and calorimetric assays) to guide construct design and 
optimization of solution conditions for successful structural outcomes.
 3.  Experience with fragment-based lead discovery techniques and workflows.
 4.  Experience with additional structural techniques such as serial 
crystallography, macromolecular NMR, electron microscopy, and small-angle 
scattering.
 5.  Experience crystallizing nucleic acid (especially RNA) and protein:nucleic 
acid complexes.
