Awesome! Workaround #1: compile from source on Linux.
That this works may indicate that precompiled PyMOL executables are being linked to different shared objects, perhaps older and apparently broken. Of course, it could be almost anything, but "ldd ./pymol.exe" may provide a starting point for tracking this down vis-a-vis "ldd _tkinter.so" for the Python/Tkinter instance associated with your locally-built PyMOL.
