Savvas,

Thank you for aggregating and posting that information. Just so everyone
knows, it is possible to do this on a CRT/LCD-dual-headed Mac Pro with the
Quadro FX 4500 graphics card. Having recently set this up for myself, I can
attest to the fact that "it just works" without mucking with config files.

However, the Mac price is signficantly higher because Apple only offers a
high-end stereographics solution -- nothing but the best, I guess. Thus, in
bottom-line terms:

If you have more time than money, lean toward the Linux-based solution.

If your time converts to money, then weigh acquisition costs vs. management
costs.

If you have more money than time, then lean toward a Mac-based solution.

With respect to displays, if you have more money than desk space, and only
need a stereo setup for 1-2 people, then you might want to consider the 19"
switchable autostereoscopic LCD from DTI:

ge,shop.flypage/product_id,7/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,1/

This product is both a standard LCD display and a 19" 1280x1024
autostereoscopic unit (true stereo 3D without glasses). I just re-confirmed
with one of their engineers over the phone that the $3,695 "Virtual Window
19" equipped with the $195 Display Control Unit (DCU) can accept a standard
CRT stereographic video signal from existing 3D applications on existing
systems. Thus, for under $4,000 USD, you could potentially eliminate that
CRT altogether.

(Disclaimer: I have yet to see this unit in action but have heard favorable
feedback from a couple of PyMOL users who have seen it).

Cheers,
Warren
