Dear readers of this list, I installed pymol version 0.98 onto a Ubuntu 6.06 system with working direct rendering (Matrox driver for g450):

[...] OpenGL-based graphics engine: GL_VENDOR: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org GL_RENDERER: Mesa GLX Indirect GL_VERSION: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.4.1) Accordingly, performance of pymol is poor as far as rendering is concerned. Did I miss a switch to enable direct rendering?
