Dear readers of this list,

I installed pymol version 0.98 onto a Ubuntu 6.06 system with working direct
rendering (Matrox driver for g450):

tob...@phoebus:~$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI G400 20050609

However, when I start pymol, it says the following:

tob...@phoebus:~$ pymol
freeglut (pymol): Unable to create direct context rendering for window 'PyMOL
Viewer'
[...]
PyMOL(TM) Molecular Graphics System, Version 0.98.
[...]
 OpenGL-based graphics engine:
  GL_VENDOR: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
  GL_RENDERER: Mesa GLX Indirect
  GL_VERSION: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.4.1)

Accordingly, performance of pymol is poor as far as rendering is concerned.
Did I miss a switch to enable direct rendering? Have other Ubuntu users
experienced the same difficulties?

tob...@phoebus:~$ dpkg -s freeglut3
Package: freeglut3
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: libs
Installed-Size: 272
Maintainer: Jamie Wilkinson <j...@debian.org>
Architecture: i386
Source: freeglut
Version: 2.4.0-4

Thanks for helpful hints

Yours sincerely

Tobias Hilbricht
