ATI/Linux Graphics Card Users, One of our users has been struggling with a strange crash on an ATI Radeon Mobility chip under Redhat 8.0. Display of cartoon representations generated an illegal instruction and crashed the program. A workaround has been discovered: turn of ATI hardware acceleration buy setting an environment variable:
setenv LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT before starting PyMOL. Hopefully we'll find a better solution in the future, but this is something worth trying on LInux if PyMOL ever blows chunks when you show a particular graphics representation. By the way, here is the GL information for comparison. GL_VENDOR: VA Linux Systems, Inc. GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI Radeon 20010402 AGP 1x x86/MMX/3DNow!/SSE GL_VERSION: 1.2 Mesa 3.4.2 The machine is a laptop: Dell Latitude C640 with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 4X AGP/32 MB DDR video memory and SXGA+ screen (nominal resolution: 1400x1050). For details see: http://www.dell.com/us/en/biz/products/model_latit_latit_c640.htm Interestingly enough, I have a Radeon 8500 also on RedHat 8.0, and encountered no trouble at all, so there may be something specifically broken with this setup.
