Traversal has been optional since the framework was released in July of 1998 (it has always had "url dispatch"). Fair enough, yes, the documentation has been updated. That said, I think our job is to provide a set of features that can accomodate a good number of use cases easily. Handlers, and imperative configuration are ways to allow for some of those use cases. But I reject the notion that these combined are somehow "the one, true, right way" for all prospective new users.
