You can try using the hiera command line tool on your hiera.yaml file. hiera -c '/path/to/hiera.yaml' your::variable.
You may also need to check your server logs to see if there is an error. If you're using the Java Pupperserver, you may want to restart it due to the change in environment caching. Finally, you can add a notify to the code in question and see what comes out the other side.
