I'm still none wiser. Another client (SLES 11 SP2) runs fine with this server, and the same modules are used. So it must be a permissions thing on the client, but where? BTW, all boxes now run puppet-3.2.4-1.1 from the systemsmanagement:puppet repos on openSUSE's build system.
