Yes, that will work. We actually do something slightly ickier, so the
data all stays in hiera:

hiera hierarchy:
   - nodes/%{hostname}
   - ...
   - roles/%{role}

nodes/foo.yaml:
...
role: desktop
classes:
   - "roles::%{role}"

node default {
   $role = hiera('role')
   include hiera('classes')
}
