Thanks R.I Pienaar, I did think that may be the problem that the older version doesn't understand the class type, but wanted to make sure that was the issue and not something I was doing wrong. Using a parameterized version of the class, and then the same manifest works perfectly on version 2.6.x of the puppet client. It's just some machines had this older version and I was hoping to get away with it so to speak.
