This seems to be the problem that newer activerecord will get into an endless loop while serializing. I use the following activerecord versions, which works from 2.6 -> 3.1 gem install activerecord -v 3.0.1 I'm not sure if you can go onto the latest 3.0.x version, but that would be better (security wise).
