I thought providing a phone number was optional, or at worst one of
several alternatives.  Perhaps there has been a change, but I am
certain that no telephoning or SMS messaging was involved when I set
up this account.  Really, it sounds pretty unlikely that telephony
would be an essential requirement for setting up an account.
