At Vanderbilt University, we have a compute cluster with about 700 machines total, all under puppet. The machines are broken into 3 groups: compute nodes, gateways, and infrastructure. The puppet server is a dual-quad core box with 16GB ram, using apache and passenger. All 700 boxes check in once per hour, but we are considering running puppet out of cron on the nodes and gateways, dialing back the frequency of puppet runs.
