Robin, James and Ken have great suggestions, and I only want to add that if IRC / Mailing lists / documentation / patches aren't "social" enough for you, organizing any-sized meetups in your area are also a phenomenal way to help Puppet out. Lots of people are really interested to see and hear about how to quickly get started with Puppet and "get stuff done." While I wasn't an organizer, I got my start in the Puppet community on the mailing list, IRC channel, and talking with people face to face at conferences and linux user groups.
