I've seen the same error as you this week when I was playing with FreeBSD-8.1-RELEASE which uses puppet 0.25.4 and my puppet master is under Debian squeeze with puppetmaster 2.6.1 Upgrading the client fixed my problem. It's not very scientific, though.
