Besides https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/4783 (closed 3 months ago), I haven't been able to find any issues that come close to what I'm seeing. I have updated rrdtool (incl. librrd and the Ruby bindings) to version 1.4.3, but I didn't notice any improvement.
