Michael, Having recently moved from Austin (and having stayed at the Driskill), I can definitely verify this is a lower price than normal. The Driskill is generally considered one of the best hotels in town -- but keep in mind there are a number of other options within walking distance (Hilton, Omni, La Quinta, etc).
Andrew, The Ginger Man and Buffalo Billiards are pretty popular destinations for groups -- of course there's a lot of choices down there. I'm sure some [current] Austinites will chime in.
